At Silver Creek Pre-School, music therapy aims to support the overall developmental growth of each child. The music therapist works alongside and in conjunction with other therapeutic disciplines and teachers. Music therapy sessions include singing, listening, moving, playing and creative activities, using many types of instruments and exploring many styles of music. These activities work on increasing auditory attention, auditory discrimination, self-awareness, self-regulation, and coping skills.
Music therapy is defined as the skilful use of music and musical elements by an accredited music therapist to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, and emotional qualities. These are used in the therapeutic relationship to facilitate contact, interaction, self-awareness, learning, self-awareness, communication, and personal development. (Canadian Association for Music Therapy/Annual General Meeting, Vancouver, British Columbia, May 6, 1994.)
The ways in which music therapy is practiced at Silver Creek are listed below.
Classroom music therapy
Classroom music therapy is a strong focus of the music therapy program, occurring weekly in every class. Classroom music therapy focuses on the following goals:
1. To promote increased confidence and social comfort through participation in instrumental play and the singing of songs.
2. To promote increased auditory attention through initiating and sustaining body movements that correspond to the beat of a presented song.
3. To promote group cooperation and impulse control. (Activities include: holding and moving the parachute, waiting and taking a turn, and sharing an instrument with the therapist or with a peer.)
Music and movement groups
Throughout the year, different groups of children with similar physical needs participate together in gross motor musical activities. These activities include: maneuvering through obstacle courses (crawling through a tunnel, walking across a balance beam, stepping up and down stairs), body awareness songs and games, trunk control in sitting to allow reaching in all directions, transitional movements (sit to stand and high kneeling, moving from lying to sitting, crawling and reaching), standing balance, and activities using the parachute. All groups are planned in conjunction and co-facilitated with the occupational therapist or physiotherapist, assistant OTA/PTA, and music therapist.
Individual and small group music therapy
Individual sessions are offered as needed, and are structured to meet the needs of the child. Small group therapy is at times in partnership with speech or physio/occupational therapy. Goals for both individual and small group therapy are created to suit the needs of the children.
David flourished at Silver Creek and so did I. The staff became my friends and a great emotional support to me. They helped with equipment suggestions, sources of extra funding, and co-ordinating David’s school placement at Sunnyview P.S. Well, David moved on but I stayed. I have been on the Board of Directors since 1998, and President for the past 5 years. Silver Creek is a magical place!
My daughter first attended Silver Creek when she was 2 years old and it was the first time I left her in the care of someone outside our family. The teachers and staff at Silver Creek were so empathetic and understanding and made the process less stressful for both my daughter and myself.
Silver Creek has given my son the tools that are necessary to succeed in school, and in life. Their patience and love have guided my son to develop in ways that words can’t describe. He is a confident individual who thrives on challenges and I thank Silver Creek for that. Actually, I thank all the members of Silver Creek for all they have done. It is truly a great place to be.
The things I like about Silver Creek: 1. Playing on the computer 2. Playing dress-up with my friends 3. I like when the teachers read books to me 4. I also liked to spend time with Bill. He used to tell me jokes. They were very, very, very, very funny. 5. My favourite activity was listening to music

The staff at Silver Creek are a very special group of professionals who I find care deeply for the children they work with while at the same time pushing them to excel and surpass expectations often placed on children with disabilities. Thank you, Silver Creek!
I will never forget the moments when interacting with my children’s teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapist and volunteers how obvious it was they were fulfilling their truest calling in supporting them and all children. I feel profoundly lucky and grateful knowing that my children’s path forward is brighter now because of them.
Silver Creek offers one-on-one attention to all children that strives to bring out the very best in each child, regardless of what their needs are. By far, one of the best benefits of the program is the staff, who are loving and supportive and who go well beyond expectations on a daily basis.
Fadhil has become a more confident boy ready to take on the world. He is able to sign and communicate his needs very efficiently. I am no longer worried about how he will do in school because of the great accomplishments that I have seen while he was at Silver Creek. Thank you for giving us courage and strength.
The Gedi Family
Silver Creek is a place like none other. Silver Creek allowed our confidence in our own abilities and decisions to be celebrated as Marasia’s world opened up in front our eyes. We are forever grateful for the exceptional staff at this very special place who make children (and their families) feel like superstars everyday.
The Townsend-Nunes Family
The one-on-one attention, the follow through notes that the OT, the Speech and Language therapist or the music teacher, and everyone that’s involved is phenomenal. Silver Creek staff, you possess the healing hands and big hearts for looking after the welfare of our child in the areas we don’t know how.
