Silver Creek families receive speech and language services through our partnership with Early Abilities speech and language program. A speech pathologist (SLP) is at Silver Creek 2 days/week and provides the following services, in conjunction with a 3-days/week Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA):
Monitoring of emerging skills
Home programs for parents/caregivers
Small group therapy (typically in blocks of treatment)
Supported transition to school (kindergarten)
Referrals to Augmented and Adapted Communication (AAC) at Holland-Bloorview or Surrey Place Centre
Authorizing of Assistive Devices Program (ADP) appropriate technology
Our SLP works closely as part of the classroom teams so that communication skill development is paramount in every classroom, for every child. We use a total communication approach that includes Boardmaker™, pics, concrete representation, sign language, assistive technology and spoken language.
We also offered our families, new staff, and volunteers a course in Signed English each year.
Silver Creek provides some fundraised money to this Communication Program to enhance what TPSL is able to provide.
The staff at Silver Creek are a very special group of professionals who I find care deeply for the children they work with while at the same time pushing them to excel and surpass expectations often placed on children with disabilities. Thank you, Silver Creek!
I will never forget the impact that Silver Creek had on our family and more importantly Piero’s success in transitioning into mainstream school. Always a challenge but without a doubt you and your team made all the unknowns not as daunting as them seemed.
Susy Gallucci, mom of Piero
The staff at Silver Creek are some of the most gifted teachers that I have met and while showing such love and compassion for all their students, they also have the unique ability to push students out of their comfort zone to help them excel in all areas of development.
I will never forget the moments when interacting with my children’s teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapist and volunteers how obvious it was they were fulfilling their truest calling in supporting them and all children. I feel profoundly lucky and grateful knowing that my children’s path forward is brighter now because of them.
David flourished at Silver Creek and so did I. The staff became my friends and a great emotional support to me. They helped with equipment suggestions, sources of extra funding, and co-ordinating David’s school placement at Sunnyview P.S. Well, David moved on but I stayed. I have been on the Board of Directors since 1998, and President for the past 5 years. Silver Creek is a magical place!
The staff at Silver Creek see the children as a ‘whole child’ i.e. well beyond any special needs that they might have, and see them as individuals with lots of strengths in different ways. For me, I have learned that the more work I can put into helping my child, the more she will be able to achieve her goals, and they can be small goals so we can celebrate success often. You are a very special group of people and you have definitely made a huge positive impact in our lives.

Since Xavier has been diagnosed with Sandhoff disease, my family’s lives have been turned upside down. It has been difficult for us to find a place for our family in the community. And then we found Silver Creek, it is like a second home to us. I would love the opportunity to give back to Silver Creek.
Silver Creek has given my son the tools that are necessary to succeed in school, and in life. Their patience and love have guided my son to develop in ways that words can’t describe. He is a confident individual who thrives on challenges and I thank Silver Creek for that. Actually, I thank all the members of Silver Creek for all they have done. It is truly a great place to be.
My two hearing impaired daughters were placed in classrooms with excellent peer language role models to assist in their language and articulation development. They received individualized programs to meet their needs. Silver Creek prepared them well for mainstream kindergarten. We are forever grateful.
